    NaraLeo,theMusadaBossaNova(BossaNovasMuse,assheisaffectionatelyknown),wasaprominentfigureinbossanova.Shedidntrestrictherselfasabossanovasinger,though,andwasoneofthefirstartiststoengageinthemovementlaterknownascanodeprotesto(protestsong),anartisticmovementwhichdenouncedmilitarydictatorshipinBrazil.Shelaunchedthecareersofsuchcomposers/interpretersasChicoBuarque,ZéKeti,MartinhodaVila,EduLobo,PaulinhodaViola,andFagner.Aninternationalperformerinspiteofhershort,uneducatedvoice,sheleftanexpressivediscographyeventhoughdeathcaughtherbysurpriseatsuchaprecociousage.

    Whenshewasayearold,sheandherfamilyleftVitóriaforRio.In1954,shetookherfirstvioloclasseswithSolonAyalaandPatrícioTeixeira,andthenwithRobertoMenescalandCarlosLyra.Asanamateur,sheparticipatedinthefirstuniversitypresentationswherebossanovawascomingtogetherasanorganizedmovement.SheperformedwithnamessuchasJooGilberto,LuizEa,RonaldoBscoli(withwhomshewouldhavealoveaffairandlaterbecomehisfiancée),CarlosLyra,andothers.Atthattime,shewasareporterforRiosnewspaperltimaHora.TheampleapartmentofhercomplacentparentsinRiossouthside(zonasul),Copacabana,Posto4,becameameetingpointformusicians,whichledmanytoerroneouslyestablishitasabossanovacradle(actually,thecradlewas,tosomeextent,theCantinadoCésar,butevenmoreappropriately,thePlazanightclubaround1952).In1963,shedebutedasaprofessional,workinginthemusicalcomedyPobreMeninaRica,byViníciusdeMoraesandCarlosLyra.Whileworkingontheplay,theyalsoactedattheCariocanightclubAubonGourmet.Shealsodebutedinthatyearinrecordingstudios,singingNaná(MoacirSantos),whichwasincludedinthemoviesoundtracktoGangaZumba,ReidosPalmares(CacáDiegues).ShealsorecordedtwotracksonCarlosLyrasLPDepoisdoCarnaval(Philips):themarcha-ranchoMarchadaQuarta-FeiradeCinzas(CarlosLyra/ViníciusdeMoraes)andthesamba-jazzPromessasdeVocê(CarlosLyra/NelsonLinseBarros).Alsoin1963,shetouredBrazil,Japan,andFrancewithSérgioMendes.WhentheytouredtheNortheast,LeowasintroducedbyRobertoSantanatotheso-calledVilaVelhaGang,thebaianosCaetanoVeloso,GilbertoGil,GalCosta,andMariaBethnia.HerfirstLP(Nara),recordedbyElenco,launchedthesambistadomorro(sambistaofthehill)ZéKetiintothemiddle-classcirclewithgreatsuccesswithhissongDizqueFuiporAí(withH.Rocha).ShealsoreintroducedtothesamecircletheoldersambistadomorroCartola(OSolNascerá,togetherwithEltonMedeiros).Alongwiththesetwosongs,whichbecameall-timehits,anothertwosongsrecordedonthatalbumhadthesamesuccess:Consolao(BadenPowell/ViníciusdeMoraes)andOMorro(CarlosLyra/GianfrancescoGuarnieri).Onthatalbum,sheevidencedhersocialconcerns(stillabitnave),choosinganon-bossarepertoire.TheseconcernswereevenmoreevidentinthefollowingphaseofhercareerwhenacouptookpoweroverBrazilandinstalledthemilitarydictatorship;thiseventprovokedhertoactivelydenounceit.Hersecondalbum,OpiniodeNara(Leosopinion,Philips,1964),broughtOpinio(ZéKeti).InDecember1964,shemadeagreatsuccesswiththeshowOpinio(GianfrancescoGuarnieri/AugustoBoal)attheTeatroOpinio(Rio).TheshowbroughttogetherLeo,amiddle-classyounggirl,ZéKeti,representingthemorropeople,andJoodoVale,fromthepoorregionofNortheast.Theshowwassuchalongtimesuccessthatitrobbedthemiddle-classaudiencesmakingtheimportantsambaredoubtZicartolaprofitable,whichwasownedbyCartolahimself;itcloseditsdoorssoonafterwards.ItalsokilledbossanovainBrazil.Leodeliveredpassionatespeechesagainstbossanovainthattime,callingitanalienatingmovement.Atthesametime,theinstrumentalbackingoftheshowOpiniowaspurebossa,ascanbeheardonaCDreissuedin1994,informingthattherupture,atthattime,wasmoreideologicalthanmusical.In1965,shepresentedChicoBuarquewithhissongsPedroPedreiro(strongsocialthematic)andOlê,Olá.Alsointhatyear,sheparticipatedintheTeatroOpinioshowLiberdade,Liberdade(freedom,freedom),byFlávioRangel/MillrFernandes.ShealsoappearedonElisRegina/JairRodriguesregularTVshowOFinodaBossa,whicheventuallyalsohadChicoBuarque,GilbertoGil,CaetanoVeloso,EduLobo,TomJobim,ViníciusdeMoraes,andIvanLins.In1966,sherecordedheralbumManhdeLiberdade(Philips).DefendingChicoBuarquesABanda,togetherwithhimatTVRecordsIIFMPB(1966,SoPaulo),shewonfirstplace(togetherwithDisparada,byGeraldoVandréandThéodeBarros).LeorecordedABanda,togetherwiththefirstsongcomposedbytheduoGilbertoGil/Capinam,Ladainha.Thenextyear,shesang,togetherwithitsauthor,AEstradaeoVioleiro(SidneyMiller),attheIIIFMPB.ThesongwasawardedforBestLyrics.Between1966and1967,sheandChicoBuarquehadaregularweeklyTVshow(PraVeraBandaPassar,TVRecord).In1966,shewasalmostframedintheNationalSecurityLawbytheWardepartmentduetoadirectcritiqueagainstthemilitaryinaninterviewwiththeCariocanewspaperDiáriodeNotícias(ourmilitaryforcesareofnoavail).In1967,sherecordedtheLPCantoLivredeNara.In1968,shejoinedtheTropicalistamovement,joiningCaetanoVeloso,GilbertoGil,RogérioDuprat,TomZé,Capinam,OsMutantes,TorquatoNeto,andGalCostaontheLPTropicáliaouPanisetCirsensis.Thesameyear,sherecordedherLPNaraLeo,onwhichshesangErnestoNazarethsOdeonthathadViníciusdeMoraeslyricswrittenespeciallyforher.TheLP,releasedattheCariocanightclubLeBilboquet,broughttwoofVelososcompositions,(MameCoragemandDeusvosSalveEstaCasaSanta,bothwithTorquatoNeto)andthearrangementsofRogérioDuprat,whichhelpedestablishaconnectionwithTropicalia.Shehaddecidedtostayoutoftelevisionforawholeyear,fornotagreeingwiththeshortvisionofartoftheproducers.Inthenextyear,shemovedtoFranceandrecordedanotherLP.In1971,sherecordedDezAnosDepois(Polydor)inParisandthenwentbacktoBrazil.Inthenextyear,sheappearedinthefilmQuandooCarnavalChegar(byCacáDiegues,herhusband),togetherwithChicoBuarqueandMariaBethnia.Inthefollowingyears,shebeganherpsychologycollegestudies,leavingmusicaside.Inthatperiod,shemadeonl
